What are Whey and Casein?

Protein Powders

By now, you’ve probably heard some hype that you need to be getting a sufficient amount of protein each day. (It’s your weight multiplied by 0.36 if you’re sedentary but more if you’re active, by the way.) And if you’re watching your protein intake, you might have noticed that it can be hard to get the amount you need.

That’s where protein supplements come in. There are a bunch of different types available today, but we’re going to focus on two of the most common: whey and protein.

They’re both derived from milk and both offer all the essential amino acids your body needs. But there are some notable differences.

What is whey?

Whey protein contains active proteins called immunoglobulins. These support your immune system. Whey is also quickly absorbed into your body, which is why a lot of people choose it as a post-workout recovery drink to help build muscle.

What is casein?

Casein has bioactive peptides that support a healthy immune system and digestion. It’s slower to digest, so a lot of people take it as a meal replacement or before bed.

Which is best?

Both whey and casein can help your body get the protein it needs to thrive. Whey is generally better if you’re trying to build muscle and casein is preferred if you want something that will help you stay fuller longer.

But because they’re both great options with unique health benefits, we’ve chosen to use a blend of whey and casein in our ICONIC products. This gives your body easily digestible, complete protein with all the essential amino acids.

Our blend of whey and casein gives your body protein it can digest fast, making it ideal post-workout, and protein it digests slowly, helping you stay sated, making it a perfect on-the-go meal.

At the end of the day, we’re just trying to help you get the protein you need to feel great.
